Housewarming gifts — five things that actually get used
The easiest housewarming present is something that ends up in a cupboard. Here are the things that stay out where you can see them.
1. A candle coaster
A candle without a coaster leaves wax on the furniture. It is the small thing nobody thinks of while they are settling in, and everybody notices after the first stain.
2. A tray for the hallway
For keys, a wallet, and whatever comes out of your pockets. In a new flat you have to decide where that place is, otherwise it decides itself — and it will be the windowsill.
3. A vase for dried stems
No watering, nothing to remember, and it fills an empty shelf. New flats have plenty of empty shelves.
4. A bathroom pot
Soap, cream and a toothbrush spread across the shelf look like clutter. Gathered on one tray, they look like a decision.
5. A set rather than a single piece
If you do not know your hosts’ taste well, a set in one colour is safer than a single bold object. It is easier to fit in with what they already have.
